Oral Pathology
A special type of tissue, also known as oral mucosa lines the inside of the mouth. The mucosa is coral pink in color and smooth. An alteration in the appearance of the mucosa may be a warning sign for an abnormal process. Signs at the beginning of an abnormal process or cancerous growth can be any of the following:
• Difficulty in swallowing or chewing
•A sore that does not heal and easily bleeds
• Chronic hoarseness and sore throat
•Reddish patches or whitish patches in the mouth
• A thickening or lump on the skin lining inside the mouth
• Swelling of soft tissue of the mouth or jaw bones.
Such changes can be detected on cheeks, lips, tongue, face, palate, neck, and/or gum tissue around the teeth. Pain does not always occur and is not often associated with initial phases of oral cancer.
